Lafarge Cement Wapco Emphasises Commitment To Educational Development
Leading cement manufacturing company Lafarge Cement WAPCO Nigeria Plc has emphasised its commitment to the educational development of its host communities and beyond.
This commitment was demostrated recently during the commissioning of the rehabilitation of Baptist Day Primary School ,Agbesi Estate ,Ewekoro.
The rehabilitation of the school which cost over N20million naira included five blocks of fourteen classrooms, provision of 300 student chairs and desks, 400 pairs of school uniforms, toilets, electrification of school and provision of Science Laboratory.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Guy Chaperon, Project Director, Lakatabu Expansion project who represented the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lafarge Cement WAPCO, Samy Ahmed Abdelkader expressed delight that the company has achieved the aim of turning the primary school into a model school that will continue to be a reference point in the environment.
Abdelkader explained that ‘‘It is the desire of Lafarge Cement WAPCO to see that quality education is available to our host communities. We have demonstrated this in different ways through an annual bursary award scheme and distribution of writing materials to students in Ewekoro and environs. ‘’ Continuing, Abdelkader said, ‘‘For other youths that are not into formal education, we have developed artisan schemes and other youth empowerment initiatives to positively engage them’’
The Commissioner for Education in Ogun State, Professor Segun Awonusi who led the commissioning ceremony described Lafarge WAPCO’s intiative as a landmark achievement for the development of education and the entire Agbesi Community and Ewekoro Local Government.
While congratulting the company on the initiative, Professor Segun Awonusi said, ‘’ the building can compared favourably with any modern school building. There is no doubt whatsoever that this new environment will inspire the pupils to study more. Teachers will also feel proud and comfortable working in this new environment and I am sure this will translate into better academic perfomance .‘’
The Executive Chairman State Universal Basic Education Board, Chief Sina Adejobi while describing the renovation of the school as a “huge investment in Education”,advised the teachers and the pupils to make good use of the school and be inspired by the renovation to produce great scholars for the nation’s future development .
